James McQueen PS celebrates Earth Day with unique art project

May 2, 2019

FERGUS, Ontario – James McQueen Public School celebrated Earth Day this April by engaging in a unique art project.

The message of the project was to stop using one-time use plastics. Each class in the school was provided with a piece of wood, unknown to students, each piece of wood was part of a larger puzzle.

Classes collected one-time use plastics from the waste bins and brought them back to their classroom. Collected items included candy wrappers, granola bar wrappers, applesauce container lids and more.

Classes were then tasked with coming up with a creative design that saw the collected items being used to decorate their piece of wood.

On April 24 at the school’s Earth Day assembly, each class presented their piece of wood and then had it fixed to the larger base. At the end of the assembly, students were so excited to see that their class art pieces made up a mural of a sea turtle.
