Jean Little PS students learn to code during Computer Science Education Week

December 12, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – Students at Jean Little Public School took a deep dive into coding during Computer Science Education Week.

This year, Computer Science Education Week is December 9-15. This week, students around the Upper Grand District School Board joined thousands around the world looking at coding and computer science and how they can be used in the classroom.

On December 12, UGDSB Curriculum Lead Jen Apgar visited Kay Elford’s class at Jean Little PS for the second time this year to teach students how to code. Students were very enthusiastic to learn how to code shapes and snowflakes.

Elford’s class was one of many around the Upper Grand DSB that participated in the Hour of Code this week. The Hour of Code is not intended to teach students how to code in 60 minutes, but to show students that anyone can learn the basics of coding.

When speaking about her students, Elford indicated that she is very proud of the coding work they have done this year and their willingness to try, fail and try again.
