John F. Ross prepares students with first responders course

June 6, 2023

Guelph, ON — Students at John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute put their skills to the test and explored career options with a new First Responders course.

Students in the First Responders course earn their Emergency Medical Responder Designation by the end of the semester. To achieve their designation they are tested on: oxygen therapy, vehicle extraction and backboard application among other things.

Course Instructor, Paul Lydan calls the high school course, “one of a kind” and emphasizes the “importance of giving students a path with plenty of open doors after they graduate from high school into a public sector that needs new people.”

The students in the newly implemented course were able to take several trips, the first to Rockwood Fire Station where they were able to rotate between different first responders – the Ontario Provincial Police, the Rockwood Fire Service and Wellington Paramedic Service, where they learned first-hand how equipment from each service operates.

The second trip was to the Guelph Fire Station and the Fire Prevention team shared with students different career pathways within the city’s fire service.
