John McCrae PS is promoting social justice this holiday season

December 18, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario – John McCrae Public School is embracing the spirit of the season by giving back to the community.

The school has come together for a 12 Days of Giving winter food drive. To make the food drive more impactful and engaging for students, there are specific donation items assigned to each day.

Items being collected include hats, mittens, scarves, toiletries, food donations, Kleenex, toilet paper, paper towels, school supplies, books, coats and boots.

This year the kindergarten students are helping lead the collection by going around collecting the donations from the classrooms each day. Kindergarten students also helped create posters to help advertise the 12 Days of Giving. These posters are displayed in the front foyer of the school.

Students in grades 5 and 6 are organizing the donations. The 12 Days of Giving is a whole-school effort and something all students and staff wanted to do to help support and give back to the community.

The donations collected by the school will support many places in the community and the hats, mittens and scarves will be used to decorate the Giving Tree in the front foyer. The food donations will support Chalmers Community Service Centre and the other donations will support Women in Crisis and Hope House.

Community service and social justice issues are very important to John McCrae PS and the 12 Days of Giving is just one of the many projects that the school is involved in this year.
