John McCrae PS students create collaborative art piece to honour Humboldt Broncos

GUELPH, Ontario – Students at John McCrae Public School have created a collaborative art piece to honour those affected by the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy.
In the wake of the April 6 tragedy, an intermediate arts class led by teacher Krista Bird was talking about what they could do as a school to commemorate the lives that were lost.
The crash happened in Saskatchewan, but it affected people across Canada and beyond. It hit home for many students, families and staff.
The grade 8 class came up with the idea of collecting recycled hockey sticks to make a collaborative art piece. Students in the school donated wooden hockey sticks to contribute to the project.
The class carried out their idea by working together, sharing ideas and creating a meaningful work of art.
Bird provided the students with paint – yellow and green, the colours of the Humboldt Broncos – and the students took the reins from there, sanding the sticks, painting them, writing down their feelings about the tragedy, and bringing the whole piece together.
In an artist statement written by two boys in the grade 8 class, the students said they wanted to make an art piece to remember those affected by the Humboldt tragedy. It is also their hope that the donated hockey sticks will be passed on to those in need of equipment.
The class hopes the art piece will inspire the John McCrae PS school community and serve as a reminder for bravery, courage, strength, support, and resilience.
