Kenilworth PS should remain open and get upgrades according to ARC

MEDIA RELEASE
November 28, 2014

GUELPH, Ontario – The Wellington North Elementary Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) has delivered their Final Accommodation Report.

The ARC, whose voting members include parents from Kenilworth PS, Arthur PS and Victoria Cross PS, is recommending that Kenilworth PS:

Required maintenance upgrades at Kenilworth PS, estimated to cost $650,000, have been on hold due to an earlier board decision. The school also needs about $250,000 in renovations to support Full Day Kindergarten, which was implemented at Kenilworth in September 2014.

The ARC report argues that keeping Kenilworth PS open will ease enrolment pressure at Victoria Cross PS and Arthur PS. It also says that Kenilworth PS is “the foundation of the Kenilworth community,” and that the savings to the board from closing the school do not outweigh the value of Kenilworth PS to the community.

The Accommodation Review was initiated in March 2014 by a board motion, with the purpose of determining the future status of the small rural elementary school. The ARC held four public information sessions in the spring and fall to present updates, options and to get parent and community feedback.

ARC members will present their final report to trustees at the Business Operations Committee on December 9, 2014, 7 p.m., at the Guelph Board Office. The meeting is open to the public.

Board staff will present a separate final report with recommendations (the same or different than those of the ARC), at the Business Operations Committee on January 13, 2015. Trustees will make a final decision at their regular meeting on February 24, 2015.

The public is welcome to attend and/or delegate at any regular or committee meeting of the board. Delegations must pre-register by Wednesday noon prior to the meeting.

The ARC’s Final Accommodation Report and all prior documents are available on the board’s website at www.ugdsb.ca/wnar. Print copies can be viewed or requested at school offices (Kenilworth PS, Arthur PS and Victoria Cross PS), and will also be available at the Wellington North Municipal Office and libraries in Arthur and Mount Forest.
