Laurelwoods ES celebrates winter at annual Carnaval celebration

LAUREL, Ontario – There was snowshoeing, ‘ice’ sculptures and even a special visit from Bonhomme. On Friday, Laurelwoods Elementary School hosted its annual celebration, ‘Carnaval de Laurelwoods.’
The event is inspired by Carnaval de Quebec, a traditional French Canadian celebration of winter that has been held in Quebec City since 1955.
Laurelwoods staff and students celebrated all week long, with special days throughout the week including Toque Day and Quebec Day, where students came to school in their favourite Quebec jerseys or wearing blue and white.
Also during the week, students were encouraged to enter a soap carving in the soap sculpture contest. Students carved sculptures out of bars of soap and two winners in each division were selected to win prizes.
It all led up to Friday’s celebration, which featured opening ceremonies, a pancake breakfast hosted and prepared by the school’s Parent Council, and outdoor activities such as tug of war, snowshoeing and curling using homemade frozen curling rocks.
Carnaval wrapped on Friday afternoon with the closing ceremonies, which showed a video put together by staff and students, showing a lost Bonhomme wandering around the community looking for the school. Bonhomme appeared at the closing ceremonies to the delight of the kids, and the event ended with a school-wide dance, led by the school’s flash mob crew.
