GUELPH, Ontario – Mark Bailey, a trustee representing wards 1 and 5 in the City of Guelph, was re-elected Chair of the Upper Grand District School Board at the inaugural meeting of the board on December 2, 2014. It is his third year as the board’s Chair.
Trustee Marty Fairbairn, who represents Guelph Ward 6 and Puslinch Township, was acclaimed to serve as Vice-chair for a third year.
The positions are for a one-year term ending November 30, 2015.
All ten trustees took the oath of office at the inaugural meeting for the 2014-2018 board, including three rookie trustees elected in municipal elections held October 27:
- Barb White, who has been school council chair at Credit Meadows ES for the last three years, was elected as the new trustee for Orangeville.
- Martha MacNeil was elected to represent Guelph Wards 1 and 5 (along with Bailey). MacNeil has volunteered on various board committees, and for the past two years was chair of the UGDSB Parent Involvement Committee.
- Barbara Lustgarten-Evoy, a parenting advice columnist and radio host, was elected trustee for Centre Wellington. In 2013 Lustgarten-Evoy was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce.
Returning to the board table are re-elected trustees Bruce Shieck, Kathryn Cooper, Lynn Topping, Linda Busuttil and Susan Moziar.
At the inaugural meeting trustees were also named to the board’s various committees. Trustee Moziar takes on the role of Program Committee chair for the next year, with Lynn Topping as vice-chair. Trustee Cooper will reprise her role as chair of the Business Operations Committee, with Bruce Schieck as vice-chair.
Trustee Busuttil was elected by her fellow trustees as to serve as a director on the Ontario Public School Board Association’s (OPSBA) Board of Directors. The organization is routinely called on by the provincial government for input and advice on legislation, labour negotiations and the impact of government policy directions.
The final meeting of the 2010-2014 board preceded the inaugural meeting. Chair Bailey thanked outgoing trustees Jennifer Waterston, Bob Borden and David Gohn, who he noted had served their communities for more than 50 years combined. All are former board chairs. Waterston and Gohn’s record of service predates the formation of the Upper Grand District School Board in 1998, when the former boards for Wellington and Dufferin counties were merged.
