Mono-Amaranth PS hosts student wellness fair

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – On February 22, Mono-Amaranth Public School hosted a Parent Fair on Student Wellness.

The information night was presented by School Council and was sponsored by the Ministry of Education via their PRO (Parents Reaching Out) Grant program.

The evening was open to parents and guardians and included many sessions to help enhance child wellness.

Keynote speakers included Beryl Saayman and Karen Running-Selby from Dufferin Child and Family Services. Saayman and Running-Selby spoke about the pressure kids feel and how to help children build resiliency to handle day-to-day stress. They also spoke about ways to prevent anxiety in children.

MAPS Wellness Workshop

Parents and guardians were able to sign up for two of four information sessions that were available during the evening.

Jacalyn Dryland, a Registered Dietitian with DAFHT (Dufferin Area Family Health Team), hosted a session about building healthy and tasty lunch boxes that help children learn, play and grow. Mark Whitcombe, a retired program coordinator for Outdoor Education for the Toronto DSB, spoke about how exposure to nature and the outdoors has mental and physical health benefits for students.

Speaking about navigating the “cloud” was UGDSB Educator and IT Consultant Bill MacKenzie. Mackenzie discussed the “cloud” and how the technology benefits student learning. Jennifer Bascom, Wellness Advocate and owner of The Lion’s Den Yoga Studio in Orangeville, offered the fourth session. Bascom spoke about calming daily routines to benefit the whole family.

The fair included great learning, good food and many door prizes.
