ODSS student wins prestigious Loran Award

April 5, 2022

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – Congratulations are in order for Orangeville District Secondary School student Jack Gillies for earning a prestigious Loran Award through his leadership skills displayed in school and his community.

Back in its inception, the Loran Scholars Foundation recognized a gap in the type of scholarships that were being awarded to students. There were many scholarships that awarded academic or athletic excellence but very few that awarded leadership – so the foundation decided to fill that gap.

“He (Gillies) is undoubtedly one of the most impressive young people I have had the pleasure of being associated with in my 28 years in education. He is and will continue to be an exceptional representative of the Upper Grand District School Board,” said superintendent Pat Hamilton.

Gillies is active in his school and local community. He works on a local organic farm as a camp lifeguard and ski coach. He leads his school’s Student Senate, debate club, and a chapter of a youth leadership course. Gillies is the secretary for the school board’s Student Senate, and he is also involved with service clubs and a local organization for teenage volunteers.

Congratulations Jack.
