ODSS welding students build scooter racks for Montgomery Village Public School

December 14, 2017

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – Students at Orangeville District Secondary School are putting their skills to good use, in a project that builds a strong sense of community.

The ODSS welding students are designing and building four scooter racks for the elementary students at Montgomery Village Public School.

ODSS teacher and Head of the Tech Department, Richard Alexander, proposed a challenge to the students in his welding class – to make four scooter racks for MVPS.

Alexander said a number of his grade 10 students stepped up to the challenge and started on the design process.

Each rack will hold up to 15 scooters. Students cut, bent and started fabricating the first rack. Once they were confident the design worked well, they continued with the second.

The first two scooter racks will be cleaned, painted and then delivered to MVPS. And then students will start on two more racks for the nearby school.

Alexander said the project has been perfect for his students. “They are taking pride in completing [the racks] to the best of their abilities, from start to finish,” he said.
