Ontario Active School Travel encouraging active travel as students head back to school
August 31, 2021
GUELPH, Ontario – Ontario Active School Travel (OAST) has launched their Back-to-School Campaign to help students and staff be more active as they return to school.
OAST is an organization that promotes active ways for students to get to and from school. Their goal is simple, “to make walking, cycling, and other forms of active, safe, and sustainable transportation the norm for trips to and from school.”
This year’s Back-to-School Campaign focuses on active school travel as a COVID-friendly alternative to the car and school bus as we head back to the classroom in 2021.
The campaign supports walking/wheeling to school by encouraging parents/guardians and students to:
- Practice walking/wheeling routes to school ahead of reopening
- Try Drive to 5 – If you drive to school, park a block away and walk for the remaining five minutes
- Plan for active travel as a safe and healthy option
The OAST website provides campaign tips, checklists, activity sheets and more.
From now until September 17, let us know how you will be engaging in safe active school travel using #JourneyOutside.
