June 22, 2020

GUELPH, Ontario – The sister of beloved children’s author Jean Little has donated a number of books to the Upper Grand District School Board.

Throughout her career as a renowned author, Little wrote more than 50 books, many of which were children’s books. Little was partially blind and because of this, many of her children’s books focused on child characters who had disabilities.

On June 18, Little’s sister Pat de Vries donated 30 copies of Little’s book Dancing Through the Snow to the UGDSB.

Pat and Jean shared a home in Guelph for nearly 30 years. Little passed away at Hospice Wellington on April 6 at the age of 88. And now Pat is in the process of packing up their home. Through the process, she has been going through items and memories, looking through books that her sister wrote, books that she loved and more. One item that stands out is their large wood dining table that they would work at and that meant a lot to Jean, she even wrote a poem about it.

The books Pat donated to the board will be stored at the Terry James Resource Centre, so all schools in the board will have access to them.

For years, Little had been a pillar of the Guelph and Upper Grand community. You can read more about Jean Little and the UGDSB here: https://www.ugdsb.ca/blog/ugdsb-celebrates-the-life-of-renowned-author-jean-little/
