Princess Margaret PS student create COVID quilt

March 29, 2021

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – Students at Princess Margaret Public School have been busy creating a COVID quilt for the school hallway.

The inspiration behind this quilt was to make a multi-grade project where students could express their feelings, ideas, experiences and hopes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first squares created for the quilt were illustrations of students’ challenges during the initial COVID lockdown in the spring of 2020, whereas the last squares of this quilt were about looking forward.

According to Kimberley Ellis, the creator of this idea, the quilt involved a lot of classes and therefore took a while to complete. For the students that Ellis does not teach in the school, she provided them with the chance to contribute a square if they wanted to and ensured that blank space was left to add more quilt squares.

Colours for the quilt were purposefully bright to help make the hearts of students and staff at the school feel brighter.
