Remote Otter Kindergarten students start Roots of Empathy program

October 27, 2020

GUELPH, Ontario – Kindergarten students doing remote learning will be starting the Roots of Empathy program (ROE).

ROE offers empathy building courses in schools and childcare centres that teach children about feelings while connecting them with a parent and baby.

While this year, ROE is being taken on virtually, students are still learning valuable empathy skills.

Once every three weeks, Kindergarten students in the Remote Elementary School will be visited by infant twins and their mother, Sarah.

Students in the class will be asked to predict and cheer when one or both of the twin reaches a developmental milestone during their first year. The program will also allow students to identify what the baby/babies are feeling, if they are sad or happy. These identification skills will then be reinforced with classroom curriculum.

This program has been around in Canada for more than ten years, connecting thousands of students with babies and these remote school Otters are very excited to start the Roots of Empathy program and meet these twin infants and their mother.
