Rickson Ridge students learn trail building skills at Guelph’s Arboretum

GUELPH, Ontario – Students at Rickson Ridge Public School are honing their skills in trail building and plant identification, while spending time in nature.

On Wednesday Sept.20 and Thursday Sept.21, all of the school’s intermediate students went to the Arboretum at the University of Guelph to learn some trail building skills. The initiative is part of Rickson Ridge’s ongoing and upcoming partnership with the Arboretum.

Students focused on leaf description and identification, nature interpretation, and journaling about their experiences.   They also discussed different types of signage and their varied purposes.

The trip took place during Science Literacy Week, a week-long, cross-Canada initiative that aims to showcase the excellence and diversity of Canadian science and show people young and old how exciting science really is.
