May 18, 2018
GUELPH, Ontario – From noon to midnight, Ross Royals walked the track of their school to raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society.
On Friday, John F. Ross CVI participated in the Relay for Life, a nationwide fundraiser that brings together teams of friends, family, students and colleagues to raise funds for all types of cancer while celebrating cancer survivors and remembering those who have been lost.
Relay for Life fundraisers are festival-like events where team members take turns walking around a track. The events can last six to 12 hours in length, and each team has one member on the track at all times.
At the school level, Relay for Life events are a chance for a school to come together to fundraise for a good cause and for students to lead a fun, active event.
Since 2002, more than 600 school across Canada have organized 1,500+ Relay for Life events, collectively raising more than $35 million is support of the Canadian Cancer Society.
On May 18, John F. Ross CVI hosted its 12-hour long Relay for Life event.
Teams of enthusiastic Royals took turns walking around the school’s track. More than 220 students registered to participate and community members were expected to join in throughout the day.
The event also featured live performances, Zumba, a pie in the face fundraiser, push-up competition, hair cutting and music provided by Peter the DJ. At the end of the event, the team with the most community spirit received the spirit baton.
To start the event, students from Ross shared how cancer has touched their lives, in some cases through losing close family members, and in others being diagnosed themselves at a young age.
Cancer survivors from the Ross community started the walk with a lap around the track, with students lined around the edges, cheering them on.
Ross is joined by other UGDSB secondary schools that are participating in a Relay for Life event including Norwell DSS on June 1, and Westside SS and Orangeville DSS on June 15.
