Salem PS community raises money for student’s new wheelchair

December 11, 2017

SALEM, Ontario – Thanks to the hard work of kindergarten students and the generosity of a community, a young boy has a brand new wheelchair.

This year is the Year of Community at Salem Public School, and nowhere was this more evident than during a recent fundraiser held at the school.

Colton is in Junior Kindergarten at Salem PS and required a new wheelchair to support his needs. His friends and classmates decided they wanted to do something to help.

Kindergarten students organized a sale, selling homemade Rice Krispies squares and playdough, with all proceeds going toward a new wheelchair for Colton. Staff, parents and members of the school community rallied, supporting the cause and by the end of the sale, they raised more than $1,000.

The Upper Grand Learning Foundation’s Free to Achieve fund, which provides students with opportunities they would not normally have to help them reach their potential, ended up covering the full cost of the wheelchair. Wanting to keep the community spirit going, the school took the money raised at the sale and paid it forward, donating the funds back to Free to Achieve.

Colton’s mother said the family is so grateful to the school community for how they have supported them. On Monday, Colton was greeted with big smiles as he arrived to school in his new wheelchair for the first time.
