Spencer Avenue ES shares unique robotics showcase with students

June 21, 2019

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – On June 20, students at Spencer Avenue Elementary School in Orangeville had the one of a kind opportunity to learn about robotics.

Rick Cowan is the parent of a student at the school who has always had an interest in the field of robotics, an interest he has shared with his son. Through Cowan’s research, he came across the work of Dr. Guy Hoffman, professor at Cornell University and was able to connect with him.

Hoffman joined the faculty of Cornell University in 2016. According to his bio, his research field is human-robot interaction with a particular interest in “joint activities between humans and robots; human-robot teamwork and collaboration” and more.

Hoffman and Cowan teamed up and visited Spencer Avenue ES to see how students reacted to and interacted with the robots.

The robots on display at the school were from Cowan’s personal collection, Dr. Hoffman and some that are on loan from various companies.
