Statement from board staff on social media allegations

October 17, 2017

Board staff would like to provide an update regarding allegations in some of our school communities around dangerous behaviour involving students off school property, in particular, allegations of sexual assault.

An allegation was made recently on social media regarding sexual assault at a party outside of school. When the school became aware of this post, they immediately involved police and investigated at the school. Throughout this time, the school and senior board staff worked closely to ensure proper procedures were followed – the school administration followed procedures explicitly.

At this time, no victims have come forward with a complaint to the school or to police. However, we echo the statement of the principal at John F. Ross in urging anyone who does have information about this or any sexual assault to please reach out for support.

The board and all of our schools urge that anyone who has information about any allegations of sexual assault to please report it through the official channels – talk to a trusted adult (such as a parent/guardian, teacher, social worker or counsellor, principal) or report this information to the police. If you need help, there are supports available both inside and outside of our schools.

If you do not feel comfortable speaking to someone directly, we urge you to call Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-TIPS).
