Student from Westside SS wins Bill Hill Scholarship

June 8, 2023

Orangeville, ON — Congratulations to Madison L. from Westside Secondary School who received the Bill Hill Scholarship and was awarded $2,500.

Madison was awarded the scholarship for the Business and Social Sciences stream, among six other program streams that are awarded the same amount.

The scholarship was implemented by former Dufferin County Warden, Bill Hill and is intended to recognize outstanding students from the County who will be pursuing post-secondary education and/or training.

One of the requirements of the scholarship was to write a short essay. Madison said she used her essay to communicate her potential and her ideas to create a better environment for the young people in her county.

“I saw this scholarship as an opportunity to voice my concern for the youth in my area and what I saw happening right in front of me with kids my age,” Madison said.

The process of applying and putting together her application took her 2-3 hours a day for nearly two weeks, but the effort paid off when she received the call from Dufferin County letting her know she had been chosen for the scholarship.

Madison says she has already applied that scholarship money to her tuition at Nippising University where she was accepted into the criminal justice program with a focus on children and youth.

“My program has an option to do a second degree at the same time and I am considering a psychology or sociology degree to pair with criminal justice,” said Madison. She hopes that she can take the degree she will earn and use it to create safe spaces for youth within the justice system to regain and rebuild their foundation to stability.
