Students at Alma PS organize their own film festival

April 13, 2022

Lights. Camera. Action! Third and fourth grade students at Alma Public School wrote, produced and filmed their own movies to organize and host their own film festival.

Parents were invited to the Alma Film Festival to view the variety of films the students had made, like Lego animations, Claymation, live-action horror, live-action drama, mystery, action/adventure and sci-fi.

“The grade 3 and 4 class jumped at the opportunity to learn more about writing, producing, and directing their own films, as well as hosting a major event. There were multiple reasons we chose to participate, but for me it was important for students to see a large-scale project through from brainstorming to the final product – a live ceremony,”  said their teacher, Megan Scott.

The students were excited to show off all the work they had done putting the event together. Each student took on roles that contributed to the overall success of the event.

There were students acting as security at the front door ensuring those on their guest list got in. There were students on the red carpet, acting as paparazzi taking pictures as the guests walked the carpet. Inside the doors, ushers were taking guests to their assigned seats. And, there were specific student MCs that hosted the event and introduced each film.

At the end of the festival, there were awards such as ‘Best Costume Design’ and ‘Best Camera Operator’ for each student.

“I had a few parents mention that they were impressed their child could put together such a well-organized finished product,” said Scott.

“As with any project-based learning, there is usually a big learning curve and stumbling blocks along the way. I’m so proud of the resilience and resolve the students showed to work through those difficulties and make it happen,” said Alma PS principal, Jason Boyce.
