Students at John McCrae PS to compete in the Ontario Elementary School Curling Championship

March 9, 2023

GUELPH, ON — Four students from John McCrae Public School are getting ready to sweep the competition away at this year’s Ontario Elementary School Curling Competition (OESCC) set to take place in early April.

The four students banded together to create the group for the competition when their teacher, Beth McEwen, was approached at the Guelph Curling Club by one of the youth league coaches whom she curls with, to know if she would be interested in putting a group together for the OESCC.

McEwen reached out to students at her school, three of whom had already spent time curling at the Guelph Curling Club. “They all said they’d be very interested in putting a team together for the tournament,” said McEwan. “They needed a fourth player so asked a couple classmates who had curled before, one of whom was eager to join them.”

McEwen said the co-ed group has been “positive, committed, and enthusiastic” about developing their curling skills for the competition.

“The students have been phenomenal. They show commitment to their team by attending team practices after their league play on Sundays as well as Tuesdays after school. They are working together to improve their game play and strategy in preparation for the tournament.”

Currently, John McCrae PS does not have an official curling team but are looking to develop one in the future with the help of community sponsors.
