Students at Mitchell Woods PS participate in Roots 2 Rewards program

May 3, 2023

GUELPH, ON — Last week, students at Mitchell Woods Public School got their hands in the dirt planting trees in the Roots 2 Rewards tree planting project.

The project helps Guelph reach its goal of reaching 40% tree canopy cover by encouraging schools and private landowners to plant trees on their property.

“It was really important to me that the students of the respective schools be involved in the project,” said Kya Mason-Wetherill, Roots 2 Rewards program coordinator. “I really wanted them to get outside, put their hands in the dirt, and make the world a little healthier one tree at a time.”

On the day of the event, the students at Mitchell Woods had UG’s Community Environment Leadership Program (CELP) out on site helping students plant trees, as well as filling buckets with mulch and water.

“We had a total of six classes come out to plant. I would demonstrate to them how to plant properly and then they would get a buddy in their class and a CELP student one get to plant their own tree,” said Mason-Wetherill

Mason-Wetherill said that she chose Mitchell Woods specifically as an institutional pillar because she knew the Mitchell Woods principal, Mike Anderson, had visited the property recently and knew the school had a lot of space for a forest.

In total, 39 trees and 41 shrubs of differing species were planted at Mitchell Woods.
