Supporting internet safety

March 1, 2019

This week, some UGDSB schools received calls from concerned parents about an online issue referred to as the “Momo Challenge.” Reports about a disturbing social media trend that was allegedly targeting children online began to surface in the media and quickly spread this week.

The school board has provided all school administrators with information regarding the “challenge” so that they can provide factual information to children and parents individually if questions or concerns arise. Our mental health experts have advised schools not to send general widespread messages regarding this “challenge” to their school community as it may unnecessarily pique children’s interest in this issue.

Whether or not the “Momo Challenge” is a hoax, we strongly encourage parents to take this as an opportunity to talk with their children openly about internet safety. Parents can find additional information about online safety on the Canadian Safety Council website: https://canadasafetycouncil.org/online-safety-rules-kids/
