Taylor Evans PS students bring holiday cheer to retirement home residents
December 10, 2019
GUELPH, Ontario – Students at Taylor Evans Public School are spreading the spirit of giving through a project that connects them with seniors in the community.
The project was spearheaded by teachers Mrs. Cameron and Mrs. Roth. It began with staff speaking to junior students about the upcoming giving season, and rather than focus on what they wanted for themselves, students were asked to think about what they could do for others.
They decided to make fleece tie blankets to give as a gift. School staff connected with Norfolk Manor, a retirement home in Guelph, and students set to work making 45 blankets, one for each resident.
On Tuesday, residents from Norfolk Manor came to the school. They were greeted by members of Student Council, who served them hot chocolate and chatted with the residents about school, picking up a few studying tips along the way.
Next, students from each of the school’s junior classes came to present the fleece tie blankets to the residents. They were joined by Ms. Cook’s kindergarten students, who read a holiday poem. Finally, grade 1 students joined to play holiday Bingo with the residents, while enjoying cookies made by students at the school.
Many classes participated in the project in some way, from writing cards to creating the gift tags that came with each fleece blanket.
Staff hope that this will be a meaningful service opportunity for students and a way to make community ties with older generations in Guelph.
