The UGDSB remembers those affected by residential schools on Orange Shirt Day
September 30, 2019
GUELPH, Ontario – Upper Grand District School Board students and staff come together year-round to discuss the importance of reconciliation, and as part of these ongoing discussions, on September 30 the UGDSB recognized Orange Shirt Day.
Orange Shirt Day originated in the spring of 2013 as a response to Phyllis’ story about when she had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at the St. Joseph Mission residential school.
According to the Orange Shirt Day website, Orange Shirt Day is remembered annually on September 30 and an opportunity “for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.”

When I spoke to my daughter about the importance and reasoning behind reconciliation, she cried. She couldn't fathom how that could ever happen. I explained that we need to talk about it so this can never happen again. #reconciliation #EveryChildMatters @ugdsb pic.twitter.com/sp8dMu2VTo

Taking the opportunity to talk with my children about the truth and our responsibilities to reconcile on #EveryChildMatters day. More important is a reminder to myself that the conversations and learning need to happen more than just on Orange Shirt Day. @clclyne @Cvanoote pic.twitter.com/zLOox6KtMx
