MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release
July 9, 2014

GUELPH, Ontario – Mark Bailey, chair of the Upper Grand District School Board is now second vice-president of the Ontario Public School Boards Association (OPSBA), the English public school board trustee organization for Ontario. Bailey was chosen for the role at the association’s Annual General Meeting held in Niagara Falls on July 4, 2014. Boards belonging to OPSBA collectively serve more than 1.2 million students across Ontario.

“I was pleased that my colleagues kept their confidence in me to return me as an executive officer,” said Bailey, “especially given the challenges around bargaining new collective agreements in the coming months.”

He is OPSBA’s executive liaison for the Coalition for Child and Youth Mental Health, which brings education, mental health and the health sectors together with the community to promote the social and emotional well-being of children as a public policy priority. He is well acquainted with the wide range of issues and innovative ideas for education in Ontario.

“I look forward to using my local and provincial experience so that the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association continues to be as a strong voice for all English-language public schools boards and their students. OPSBA is in a unique position to help build relationships working with union leaders and the provincial government to help our schools and students become ever greater places to learn and develop.”

Bailey served for three years as the chair of the editorial advisory board of OPSBA’s “Education Today” magazine, as a member of the Education Program Work Group, and co-chaired the association’s Communications Technology Committee. A trustee for Guelph wards 1 and 5, Bailey was previously OPSBA’s first vice-president.

Elected for his second term as UGDSB Chair in December 2013, he was first elected as a trustee in 2006, and returned for his second four-year term in 2010. Bailey will be running again for trustee in this October’s municipal election.

OPSBA acclaimed Durham District School Board trustee Michael Barrett as its president, and elected Laurie French of the Limestone District School Board as first vice-president.
