UGDSB celebrates the environment with weeklong Earth Day activities
April 18, 2018
GUELPH, Ontario – Students and staff at the Upper Grand District School Board are participating in a week’s worth of Earth Day activities.
Earth Day falls on Sunday April 22 this year; therefore, UGDSB schools will run Earth Day activities between April 23 and 27.
Monday will be dedicated to “EarthPLAY” and students and staff will be encouraged to spend time outside. Tuesday is designated as “Trashless Tuesday.” Students and staff are encouraged to bring litterless lunches and reduce their carbon footprint by not generating any garbage waste. Wednesday seems like a great day to walk or bike to school. On Thursday, students and staff will be wearing green to show their support for environmental initiatives.
Students and staff can share many other activities together during the week. Some ideas include:
- Reading a nature book
- Planning an environmental inquiry
- Banning single use water bottles
- School yard clean up
- Earth Day assembly
- Tending to and creating school gardens for spring
- Spending time outside as a class
- Using morning announcements to discuss environmental initiatives
- Writing letters of concern to government officials
- Hosting a swap shop – Swap shops are a great way to repurpose goods you no longer need. At a swap shop students and staff can trade gently used items, this helps rehome items so they do not end up in a landfill.
- Turning off the lights during the lunch hour
