UGDSB makes waves celebrating World Water Day

March 21, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – World Water Day is on Thursday and many schools in the Upper Grand District School Board are celebrating the day with school-based environmental initiatives.

World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 every year; the focus of the day is the importance of water. The 2018 theme for World Water Day is “Nature for Water.” The theme explores nature-based solutions to the water challenges the world is facing.

Many schools in the UGDSB host activities on World Water Day to help students learn about the significance water plays in our society.

This World Water Day, Victory Public School has teamed up with the Water Friendship Project and The Bookshelf eBar to host an art show.

Students at Victory PS have been learning about respecting and protecting the Earth’s water. Teachers at the school have woven this education into the art curriculum. Students created one of a kind art pieces based on the book The Water Walker by Josephine Mandamin, which was inspired by her Grandmother’s journey walking for water. Students at the school also had the opportunity to see what it would be like to walk the distance for their water by carrying buckets of water through Exhibition Park. Victory PS artwork will be on display at The Bookshelf eBar on March 22. Students from Kortright Hills Public School have contributed art and poetry to the exhibit. The exhibit is open to the public.
