UGDSB schools spend the week spreading messages about bullying prevention
November 23, 2017
GUELPH, Ontario – Students are celebrating kindness and inclusivity, while raising awareness for bullying prevention.
November 19-25 is Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week. This week was created to bring awareness to all forms of bullying and help with the prevention of bullying.
Bullying can be physical, verbal, social or electronic and has a deep impact on all those involved. Throughout the week, many Upper Grand District School Board schools participated in bullying-prevention activities.
John F. Ross CVI:
The Equity Committee at the school was busy all week organizing anti-bullying events. John F. Ross CVI kicked the week off with a rainbow of positive messages, posted and passed around the school, as well as a pink shirt giveaway.
On November 21, the school’s grade 12 drama class presented two plays that share anti-bullying messages, New Canadian Kid and Out in the Open. During periods 3 and 4 of the day, “Get Real” workshops were hosted in the cafeteria for students.
To finish the week, students participated in a Bullying Resources Scavenger Hunt and dressed in pink on Thursday for Pink Day.
Kortright Hills Public School:
Kortright Hills PS recognized Bullying Awareness Week by saying no to bullying on November 21 when the whole school wore pink.
But the school didn’t stop there. To start the week, each student received a flashlight pen with the message “Shine the light on Bullying” on it.
On Wednesday, the school’s Child and Youth Counsellor visited each class with messages on anti-bullying and being a friend.
Parkinson Centennial Public School:
At Parkinson Centennial PS, the school focused on bullying prevention all week. Starting the week off with their Kindness Rocks Day, the whole school painted rocks with inspirational messages on them and placed them around the school.
Every day of the week, each class began by sharing a message or song with an anti-bullying theme. On Wednesday, the school participated in pink accessory day and on Thursday they hosted a pink shirt day and gathered in the gym for a whole school photo.
Victory Public School:
Victory PS had a treat during the week when grade 3-6 students watched John F. Ross drama students perform their play New Canadian Kid, which is filled with bullying prevention themes. The next day, the school welcomed an elder and hosted a drum circle.
