UGDSB secondary schools teach transportation with leading technology

December 20, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – The Specialist High Skills Major Program (SHSM) is helping to ensure that all 10 of the transportation programs at Upper Grand District School Board high schools have the same industry standard diagnostic tools and software.

According to UGDSB SHSM, “Today’s vehicles have sophisticated computers on board that track many aspects of operation. The days of mechanics guessing what is wrong by listening to a description from the owner about a noise have been replaced by using a scanner that takes only a few seconds to capture the vehicle’s data.”

The scanner is attached to an outlet in a car and captures one or more codes to diagnose the problem. Then the teacher or student goes to a computer, logs into the diagnostic software and enters the type‎ of vehicle and code captured on the scanner. The software suggests a number of things including fixes.

Having this technology allows students across the UGDSB engage and learn using technology that they will face after high school in the automotive industry.

SHSM is pleased to be able to prepare and support students in their transition from secondary school to the automotive sector.
