UGDSB student heading to Speaker’s Idol championships

March 20, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – Peter, a grade 8 student at Erin Public School, is heading to the provincial Speaker’s Idol championship competition.

Speaker’s Idol is a creative speech writing competition by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center and is open to Ontario students in grades 6-12. This year’s theme invited students to share their thoughts and ideas on creating positive change in the world while including Simon Wiesenthal’s quote, “I believe in the good in people.”

Ms. Carvalho, a grade 8 teacher at Erin PS, challenged her students to enter in the Speaker’s Idol competition. Participation in the competition was entirely optional, but after brainstorming, many began the task of writing their speech to submit before the February deadline.

Peter’s speech was one of 20 speeches chosen from 160 entries province-wide and he competed at the semi-finals on March 3.

Peter wrote passionately about the value of education and shed light on the millions of children that do not have access to education and how we can all do our part to help make a change.

Peter was successful at the semi-finals and will present his speech as a finalist on March 28 in Toronto.

Congratulations, Peter, we wish you luck at the finals later this month.
