UGDSB student trustees share important mental health initiative on social media
November 12, 2019
GUELPH, Ontario – Upper Grand District School Board Student Trustees Amelia and Nathalie and the UGDSB Student Senate have been busy this month spreading messages of mental health positivity on their social media accounts.
For Amelia and Nathalie, mental health is a topic that they believe needs to be addressed with their peers proactively. As a result of being more proactive about spreading their messages of mental health, they are spending the month of November sharing information for students through their Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Amelia and Nathalie said they decided to launch this campaign and use their position as Student Trustees to help show UGDSB students how to access mental health information and supports. Their goal is to keep the conversation around metal health moving forward.
According to Amelia and Nathalie, “In an effort to reach as many students in the Upper Grand as possible, we decided to use social media, specifically the ugdsbstudents Instagram and Twitter platforms. The advantages of using social media is that it is by now a widely used source for information and that the messages can quickly be shared with others.”
Amelia and Nathalie said, “It has been an asset having Jenny Marino, the Mental Health and Addictions Lead for the UGDSB, work closely with the Student Senate. She has shared information and tips about mental health at Senate meetings, so we are using our resources to spread what we have learned, or what we have been reminded of, throughout the board’s student body.”

Frequent use of technology and social media can be tiring. By limiting screen time, memory and sleep can be improved! Next post will be Monday! #MHUG #MHUGstudents #students #friday

Your mind is like a muscle: it has to be taken care of, just like physical health needs to be looked after. Rest days, reflecting on performance and addressing concerns are all applicable to BOTH mental and physical health! #MHUG #MHUGstudents

The stigma around mental health is being dismantled as more people are examining biases, initiating conversations and being conscious of language.

Mental health is a key topic in student senate: the mental health & addictions lead presented to the senators in Sept. & will be sharing “mental health moments” at future meetings. Student senators & student trustees are sure to discuss important issues, such as mental health!

Everyone, no matter their demographics or geographical location, is affected by mental health. It’s an important thing to keep in mind, for yourself and all those who cross your path. #Mhug #mentalhealth #students pic.twitter.com/iatLW9HU2U

As students, our lives can be overwhelming! It’s important, however, to keep our mental health in mind. For the rest of November, from Mon-Fri, we will be posting about something on the theme of mental health. Remember, that if faced with a mental health emergency, call 9-11.
