UGDSB students and staff turn off the lights for Earth Hour

March 23, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, as a symbolic “lights out” event. Since then, Earth Hour has become the world’s largest grassroots movement that takes action to protect the environment.

This year Earth Hour will be celebrated on March 24 between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Since Earth Hour is being recognized over the weekend, students and staff at the Upper Grand District School Board participated in Earth Hour on March 23.

At the UGDSB Guelph board office, staff turned off their computers, devices, turned off the lights over the lunch hour, and came together for a board-wide Earth Hour event.

Staff at the board office had two options to enjoy the hour with colleagues: a nature walk in the neighbourhood or playing board games in the lunch room.

The fun was not contained to the staff at the board office, as many UGDSB students and school staff participated in Earth Hour activities throughout the day.

In classrooms, students and teachers chose one hour during the day to turn off all the lights in the classrooms. Some classes used the time to use a flashlight to read, other classes played board games and other no-tech games together.

Students used part of the day to learn the purpose of Earth Hour and about how we can save large amounts of energy just by turning off the lights. Students brainstormed other ideas to help make their lives more eco-friendly.

In some schools, students presented to their class about ways to save the environment, and put reminder stickers on every light switch in the school to turn off the lights.

Don’t forget to celebrate Earth Hour with family and friends this weekend!
