FERGUS, Ontario – On January 30 and February 6, elementary students from the region competed at the Skills Ontario Cardboard Boat Races.

Both regional races took place at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus.

Skills Ontario has been hosting Cardboard Boat Races in Ontario for more than 20 years. The cardboard boats are various sizes and designs and are completely designed and constructed by students. Students are given two hours before the race to build their boats. They are provided with only two sheets of 4’ by 8’ corrugated cardboard and four rolls of duct tape.

The Cardboard Boat Races are designed to get students thinking outside the box. These races help students with hands-on construction, engineering, design and teamwork, all while ensuring students have fun.

Students representing Upper Grand DSB schools claimed the top three spots at the competition on January 30, with third place going to William C. Winegard PS, second place going to Willow Road PS and first place going to Aberfoyle PS.

On February 6, students representing UGDSB schools claimed the top two spots at the competition with second place going to Taylor Evans PS and first place going to Primrose ES.

Winning teams will represent the UGDSB at the provincial championships in March.
