UGDSB students excel at secondary Skills Ontario Qualifying Competition

GUELPH, Ontario – Upper Grand District School Board students performed very well at the Skills Ontario Qualifying Competition on April 7.

The competition was held at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario. The secondary level Skills Ontario Competition has become very popular, and as a result, Skills Ontario holds a qualifying competition to make sure that the most prepared students move on to compete at Skills Ontario.

Categories in the qualifying competition included:

On Saturday, thirteen students from the Upper Grand DSB with their teachers, travelled to Georgian College to compete in the qualifying competition.

Winning first place in the Individual Carpentry competition was Wellington Heights SS student Jordan B. Centre Wellington DHS student Madison G. won first place in the Culinary Arts challenge. Also from Centre Wellington DHS, Talon B. and Andrew S. placed first in TV and Video Production. Orangeville DSS student Chloe M. placed first in the Welding competition.

Skills Ontario Competitors from the UGDSB are supported by the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program.

Students that placed first will move on to the Provincial Skills Competition taking place on May 8 at the Toronto Congress Centre. 

Congratulations to all UGDSB students that competed in the qualifying competition and to those who will be moving on to the Provincial Skills Competition.
