UGDSB turns down the heat for National Sweater Day

February 7, 2020

GUELPH, Ontario – Many locations around the Upper Grand District School Board turned down the heat this week to celebrate National Sweater Day.

National Sweater Day is a great way to learn about the importance of saving energy. Did you know that heating accounts for 80% of residential energy use in Canada and that if all Canadians lowered their thermostat by two degrees in the winter, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by four megatons?

Everyone in the UGDSB was given the opportunity to celebrate National Sweater Day in unique ways. Many schools and offices picked a day during the week to have their heat turned down two degrees and were invited to wear a cozy sweater.

The Guelph Board Office celebrated the day by hosting a soup cook-off. Several varieties of soup were entered into the competition and for a $2 donation staff could sample them all. At the end of the competition, $100 was collected to be donated to the WWF’s Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund and the IT department was crowned the soup cook-off winner.
