UGLearnGreen: Earth Day is April 22 – How will you celebrate the Earth?
April 20, 2020
GUELPH, Ontario – April 22 is Earth Day, a great day to celebrate our planet. Earth Day is 50 years old this year, which is a great reason to celebrate.
The first Earth Day was recognized in 1970 and has been celebrated every April 22 since then. The goal of Earth Day is to continue brings awareness to climate change and to celebrate the Earth.
The theme for the 2020 Earth Day is climate action. This theme was chosen as over the last 20 years, climate change has been the biggest issue we as a species face. According to the Earth Day website, “Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make out world habitable.”
Since we are currently experiencing a time of self-isolation and physical distancing, Earth Day celebrations might be a little different this year.
Here are some tips to help make your Earth Day celebration great, while staying safe:
- Review last year’s theme on protecting our species. Last year we reflected on how every living thing plays and important role in life. Take some time to research a living thing, learn how you can protect it and brainstorm some ways to protect that living thing with your family.
- Spend some time outside. Over the last several weeks, we’ve learned that in this time of physical distancing it is still important to spend some time outside. Take a longer walk this Earth Day, while keeping a safe distance from other people.
- Cut down on energy usage. It can be hard to cut down on energy usage when you spend 24 hours a day at home. However, you can make a commitment to turn off devices for a portion of the day or turn off the lights and let some natural light into the house.
- Encourage awareness and promote reducing purchases, re-purposing items you no longer need and continuing to recycle.
