UGLearnGreen: You can make a difference this Earth Hour
March 23, 2020
GUELPH, Ontario – Join the global movement and celebrate Earth Hour this March!
Earth Hour’s mission is to unite people to protect the planet by raising awareness of about climate change and encouraging positive action.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australian, in 2007 as a lights-off event, organized by the World Wildlife Foundation and partners. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest grassroots movements for the environment on the planet. Each year, millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories participate in the event.
“Earth Hour goes far beyond the symbolic action of switching off – it has become a catalyst for positive environmental impact, driving major legislative changes by harnessing the power of the people and collective action.”
Earth Hour is officially marked on Saturday March 28 from 8:30-9:30 p.m., with people around the globe turning off the lights for an hour.
There are many ways you can celebrate Earth Hour with your friends and family in your own way, including:
- Prepare a candle-lit dinner
- Talk to your neighbours or invite people over
- Stargaze or go camping in your backyard
- Play board games or charades
- Host a concert or a sing-a-long
- Create or join your own community event
- Have an Earth Hour every month
