Waverley Drive PS student wins Safe Communities Distracted Driving video contest

May 24, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – A student from Waverley Drive Public School is the winner of Safe Communities Wellington County’s youth video contest.

The contest was open to any resident in Wellington County 19 years old or younger and asked them to answer the question, ‘What does distracted driving mean to you?’ Youth were asked to create a 60-second video that discusses distracted driving, including the hazards and consequences of distracted driving, how to avoid it, and what it means to them.

Three of the four top submissions to the contest were by Upper Grand District School Board students. The overall winner of the video contest is Rachel, a student from Waverley Drive Public School in Guelph.

Rachel created a LEGO stop motion video that provided practical tips for avoiding distracted driving and being an advocate to pass along that important information to others. “Your life is more than a text,” Rachel ended the video.

The announcement of the contest winner coincides with Safe Communities’ distracted driving public awareness campaign, which runs from May 9 to June 17, 2018.

According to Safe Communities, someone is injured by a distracted driver every 30 minutes. To raise awareness and increase public safety, Safe Communities Wellington County launched the #Every30Minutes Distracted Driving Campaign, which provides important facts and tips about distracted driving.
