WDGPH announces recipients of the Healthy Schools Grant
December 10, 2019
GUELPH, Ontario – Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) has announced the recipients of the 2019-2020 Healthy Schools Grants.
Every year, WDGPH offers a limited number of grants to schools who apply to work toward becoming a Healthy School. This is based on the Ministry of Education’s Foundations for Healthy School Framework.
According to WDGPH, a Healthy School, “is one where school staff, parents, students and community agencies work together to share ideas, plan and take action to create an environment that will have a positive impact on a child’s health and learning.”
This grant aligns with the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (OPHEA), which offers certification for schools to register and go through the 6-step Healthy Schools process.
This year, WDGPH had a huge response from Upper Grand District School Board schools for both the Public Health grant and the OPHEA certification. To receive the Public Health grant, schools were encouraged to go through the OPHEA process but this was not mandatory. That said, WDGPH decided to celebrate all of the Healthy Schools in the region.
School representatives who filled out the WDGPH grant application were asked to select their priority health topic and activities that the school team is planning to support throughout the year. Successful applicants received $200 in grant money based on application topics like healthy eating, mental health, physical activity and more.
This year, 28 UGDSB elementary schools and five UGDSB secondary schools received the WDGPH grant. Thirty UGDSB elementary schools and two secondary schools registered to go through the OPHEA Healthy Schools certification process. The 32 UGDSB schools registered for OPHEA certification is the highest number of schools registered from one school board in the province.
