We All Have Ability – May 31 to June 4 is National Accessibility Week

May 31, 2021

GUELPH, Ontario – May 31 to June 4 is National Accessibility week, a week designated to continuing the important conversations about inclusivity and accessibility.

Did you know approximately 6.2 million Canadians have some form of a disability? The number of people in Canada with a disability continues to grow as the population ages. Disabilities come in many different forms and can be visible or non-visible.

According to the Rick Hansen Foundation, even in 2021, “people with disabilities still face social and physical barriers that stop them from being a part of their communities.”

At the Upper Grand District School Board, we are committed to supporting all our students, staff and community members and are continually working to improve our accessibility supports and services.

This year, as we recognize National Accessibility Week, we are inviting schools to arrange for a guest speaker in their classroom. Guest speakers available to schools include, musician Kara Shaw, UGDSB graduate and wheelchair basketball Paralympian Patrick Anderson, Orangeville District SS graduate and para-alpine skier Sara Gillies, motivational speaker Jeff Preston, Paralympian Joshua Cassidy and dance performer Luca Patuelli.

This week, let’s continue building an inclusive and accessible UGDSB.
