Wheelchair basketball program visits Rockwood Centennial PS

February 26, 2020

ROCKWOOD, Ontario – Students at Rockwood Centennial Public School had the opportunity to learn about wheelchair basketball when the Upper Grand’s Patrick Anderson Wheelchair Basketball program came to the school this week.

Anderson is a four-time Paralympic Champion and is considered to be the best wheelchair basketball player in the world, he is also a UGDSB graduate. This program not only allows students to learn the fundamentals of the sport, but also continues the inclusion and accessibility work that the board does year-round.

Students in grades 1 to 8 at Rockwood Centennial PS used the wheelchairs during gym class this week. According to school staff, it has been a great experience to witness students come to the realization that they need to rely on different parts of their body to play this game and to be more aware of the space around them to pass the ball and shoot baskets.

This amazing program launched earlier this year and will travel around to different UGDSB schools.
