WHSS strikes back at bullying during Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week

November 22, 2019

MOUNT FOREST, Ontario – Students and staff at Wellington Heights Secondary School were one of the many schools in the Upper Grand District School Board that participated in Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week. Students and staff at Wellington Heights Secondary School were one of the many schools in the Upper Grand District School Board that participated in Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week.

To mark the occasion at the school, each day, students heard announcements that helped put the week’s theme into perspective.

On Wednesday, students and staff showed their support against bullying by wearing pink. This day was also special because staff and students were greeted in the morning at the door and were given a treat to start their day off in a positive way.

As part of the week, the sidewalks leading into the school were chalked with positive messages including the school’s non-negotiable motto, “Be Kind and Learn.”

Students were issued the challenge to pay it forward one day, which caused a very positive ripple effect in the school. Students were rushing to give their treat to other students who did not receive one, while other students purchased treats at lunch and distributed them at random.

The week saw participation from all students and staff. According to WHSS teacher Brayden Scott, “Mount Forest is a very small community, with a big heart. Students were excited to participate in the week’s events, and many excellent conversations transpired. Students learned that the simplest acts can have the biggest impacts.”

What are some ways that you can pay it forward? Let us know by tweeting @ugdsb using #UGKindness.
