West Guelph Consolidated JK-8 French Immersion (FI) Feasibility Study

Background

The Board’s Long Term Accommodation Plan (LTAP), identified a program review to conduct a West Guelph Consolidated JK-8 FI Feasibility Study.  This study will determine the viability of a consolidated JK-8 FI program in West Guelph.

Public feedback was received during the previous West Guelph JK-8 FI Boundary Review about the lack of a consolidated JK-8 FI program in West Guelph.  The FI program established as an outcome of that Boundary Review process is Gateway Dr PS JK-3 FI and Willow Rd PS Grade 4-8 FI.

In 2018/19, the FI program started at Gateway Dr PS as JK/SK and has been growing by a grade each year.  In 2021/22, Gateway Dr PS will have JK-3 FI. According to the Board motions from the Boundary Review process, the first year that FI students will leave Gateway Dr PS and feed to Willow Rd PS is 2023/24 (Grades 4 & 5). A study needs to be conducted to determine the feasibility of creating a consolidated FI program in West Guelph.

Feasibility Study Process

The feasibility study is a staff driven process, and is not a public consultation process.  The study will not result in a change to any existing West Guelph programs or boundaries but will inform Trustees about options for future processes.  Any future processes as an outcome of Trustee decision on the feasibility study are subject to a public consultation process as per the Board policies.

The Feasibility Study was initiated on June 22, 2021.  The Final Report will be presented at the Business Operations Committee Meeting on October 12, 2021 at 7:00 pm.  All are welcome to attend this meeting virtually through the following link: www.ugdsb.ca/board/board-meetings/
