UGDSB celebrates Black Brilliance month virtually this February

Posted February 3, 2021

Students and staff in the Upper Grand District School Board are coming together virtually this month to celebrate Black Brilliance, Heritage and Futures.

Responsively and with critical thought, UGDSB students are driving the work this month and have requested that the month of February be named Black Heritage, Black Brilliance and Black Futures month. This intentional name represents a balanced approach to understanding that the history, reality, and future of people of the African Diaspora involves immense racism and injustice including slavery as well as pre-slavery history, excellence, social justice and contribution.

The students who directed this work and the new name for the month include the Centre Dufferin District High School Black Chapter, Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute’s Black Student Union and the Orangeville District Secondary School Diversity Student Association.

Throughout the month of February, UGDSB students and staff will hear from students about topics like hair love and colourism, will hear from guest speakers about Black Excellence and disrupting anti-Black racism.

Students and staff at the board will also be educated in highlights of Black Brilliance, look at resources that continue to celebrate and educate, and will hear from the Black Staff Advisory group.

Black Brilliance and anti-Black racism work is done year round in the Upper Grand and we look forward to continuing this work as a board during the month of February.
