SPH 4U1 GRADE 12 UNIVERSITY PHYSICS

REVISED: 2001 08

TITLE: Physics, Grade 12, University Preparation

CREDIT VALUE: OneLEVEL: University

GUIDELINE TITLE: Physics, Grade 12, University Preparation

MIN. GUIDELINE: The Ontario Curriculum Grades 11 and 12 – Science

TEXT: Nelson

DESCRIPTION: This course enable students to deepen their understanding of the concepts and theories of physics. Students will explore further the laws of dynamics and energy transformations, and will investigate electrical, gravitational, and magnetic fields; electromagnetic radiation; and the interface between energy and matter. They will further develop inquiry skills, learning, for example, how the interpretation of experimental data can provide indirect evidence to support the development of a scientific model. Students will also consider the impact on society and the environment of technological applications of physics.

CORE UNITS:

  1. Forces and Motion: Dynamics
  2. Energy and Momentum
  3. Electric, Gravitational and Magnetic Fields
  4. The Wave Nature of Light
  5. Matter-Energy Interface

PREREQUISITE: Physics, Grade 11, University Preparation, i.e. SPH 3Ul

SPH 4C1 GRADE 12 COLLEGE PHYSICS (offered every other year, based on enrolment)

REVISED: 2001 08

TITLE: Physics, Grade 12, College Preparation

CREDIT VALUE: One

LEVEL: College

GUIDELINE TITLE: Physics, Grade 12, College Preparation

MIN. GUIDELINE: The Ontario Curriculum Grades 11 and 12 – Science

DESCRIPTION: This course develops student’s understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will explore these concepts as they relate to mechanical, electrical, fluid (hydraulic and pneumatic) and communication systems, as well as to the operation of commonly used tools and equipment. They will develop scientific-inquiry skills as they verify accepted laws of physics and solve both assigned problems and those emerging from their investigations. Students will also consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment.

CORE UNITS:

  1. Mechanical Systems
  2. Electricity and Electronics
  3. Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems
  4. Communications Technology
  5. Energy Transformations

PREREQUISITE: Science, Grade 10, Academic, Enriched or Applied, i.e. SNC 2D1, SNC 2DE or SNC
