December News

Posted December 4, 2018

December promises to be an exciting month with many different celebrations to look forward to.

There are many holidays to celebrate this time of year.

From the staff at Central we wish you all a happy and safe holiday season.  Enjoy time with your family and friends.

With the cooler weather now here, our fall term is quickly coming to an end.  Your School Council has been busy planning social and fundraising events for the 2018-2019 school year.  We thank all those who participated in our Fresh From the Farm, Art Card, and Holiday Greens fundraisers.  Funds raised have been directed to support the Scientists in School program for all grades and to further school yard greening projects.  As the holidays approach, we are looking forward to the holiday sing-a-long on Thursday, December 13th @ 7 pm with the school community and looking ahead to upcoming School Council events in 2019.  (Here’s one for your calendar: we will hold our Silent Auction on March 1st, 2019.).

Next School Council Meeting:

– Thursday, December 6th, 2018:  6:30 pm – 8:00 pm in the school library

– Childcare provided

Wishing you a happy holiday break and all the best in 2019,

Central Public School Council

Once again we are collecting donations of mittens, hats and socks to donate to a local charity.  There will be a tree set up in the front foyer of the school December 10th – 14th.  Families who wish to donate home-made or bought items can send them with their children. The children can then add them to the giving tree.

This is a time of year when we are perhaps a little more aware of the importance of reaching out and helping others in our community. In addition to our giving tree we will also be collecting food items to be donated to the Guelph Food Bank.  The Food Drive will run December 10th – 14th. A bin will be in the front foyer and by the gym.

There are many items in our lost & found. Any time you are in school, please take a minute and check for any items which might have been misplaced by your child. Items will be set out by the gym the week of December 10th – 14th.  Items not picked up will be donated.

We welcome all families to our Holiday Assembly on Wednesday, December 19th starting at 1:45 in the gym.  All classes will be doing a short presentation.

Our library is definitely a space where students are researching and learning by reading.  It is a space where students are discovering and learning through hands-on exploration. Students in grades 1-3 enjoy discovering and playing with a variety of  materials in the Library Cafe every few weeks. We are looking for donations of unique materials (scraps of fabric, beads, buttons, cardboard tubes, metal bolts and screws etc) for our Maker Space.  Depending on the theme each month, we will be sending out requests for larger items such as cardboard or tubes. During the month of December we will be working on coding activities as part of the worldwide Hour of Code initiative.

The months of January and February can bring some of our worst weather.  To determine whether schools are open or closed tune your radios to one of the following stations: 1460 AM CJOY, 106.1 FM CIMJ.  These radio stations provide regular local weather updates throughout the day as well as school closures. You can also check the board website: and click on the yellow school bus located at the top of the School Boards home page. Information can also be found online at:

PLEASE NOTE: On days when buses/taxis are cancelled, unless otherwise informed, the school will be open and a regular school program will be offered.
