Get Loud! and “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety™”

Posted October 4, 2021

Dear students and families,

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 3-9 and the Rockwood Station Fire Department is urging everyone to GET LOUD!

This year’s theme, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” works to educate everyone about the different sounds that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make. By law, every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas, however, too often, fatal fires in Ontario occur in homes where there were no working smoke alarms. Knowing what to do when an alarm sounds will keep you and your family safe. When an alarm makes noises – a beeping sound or a chirping sound – you must take action.

Do you know what your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are telling you with those beeps? Rockwood Firefighters challenge you to “Get Loud!” and push the test button on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms today and every month to learn the sound they make.

Testing alarms produces a beep, the sound of alarms in an emergency. Replace the batteries if the alarms do not sound when the test button is pushed. If the alarms still don’t sound, replace the alarms.

Testing your alarms is the only way to ensure they are working and that you and your family can be alerted and safely escape your home in the event of an emergency. Smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years.

We have attached a few valuable fire safety information sheets and a Home Fire Escape Planning Guide for you and your family to review. We would also like to invite you to follow us on the Guelph/Eramosa Fire Department Face Book page everyday as we bring you important home fire safety information as we “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety” together. Join the challenge, GET LOUD and have a chance to win a great Fire Prevention Week prize!
